The House on Pallot Road
Watercolor BATIK on ginwashi paper (on canvas)
18" x 24"
About the inspiration: this majestic house stood all alone and vacant on Pallot Road in eastern New Brunswick (Canada) for a number of years. One can only wonder about its past...
Welcome to Watercolor Batik !
Anna Rail was born in an Acadian family in a small fishing village (Pigeon Hill,) on the shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the northeastern part of New Brunswick (Canada). Although always "creative", Anna only started painting after her retirement in 2003.
Being very curious by nature as well as very determined, she fell on a Watercolor Batik a few years ago and immediately discovered that it was her niche. Batik is an artisanal technique which marries water-based paint or dye and wax. Anna uses japanese paper as it provides exactly the qualities she is looking for: consistency, resistance and flexibility. A variation in the texture and its absorbency make japanese paper the perfect choice for her paintings. Through Batik, Anna learned to be very patient! It’s all worth it when little treasures pop up at the very end of the process when wax is removed.
Nature has always been an integral part of Anna's life and a strong source of inspiration : the sea, the wharves, the lobster fishing boats in front of her cottage inspire her. Travels and the people Anna meets every day are another source of inspiration: the vivid colors, the "whimsical", the smell from the terraces.
